Italian reporter Cecilia Sala, known for her work with Il Foglio and Chora Media, has been detained in Iran since December 19, sparking diplomatic tensions between Rome and Tehran.
Arrest Details
Cecilia Sala, an acclaimed journalist and podcaster, was detained by Tehran police and is reportedly being held in solitary confinement at the notorious Evin prison. Iranian authorities have yet to provide a reason for her arrest. Sala, who entered Iran on a valid journalist visa, had been documenting stories for her podcast Stories, covering diverse perspectives, including those challenging conservative norms.
Her employer, Chora Media, stated that Sala’s phone went silent on December 19, just a day before she was scheduled to return to Rome. Italy’s foreign ministry confirmed her detention and stated that Ambassador Paola Amadei had visited Sala to assess her conditions. Sala has been allowed two phone calls with her family during her detention.

Italy’s Response
The Italian government has condemned Sala’s arrest, with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto labeling it “unacceptable.” Italian officials are engaging in high-level diplomatic efforts to secure her release, with the foreign ministry maintaining “utmost attention” to her case.
Italy’s media and public figures have rallied in support of Sala. Il Foglio, the newspaper she contributes to, issued a statement saying, “Journalism is not a crime. Cecilia was in Iran, with a regular visa, to report on a country she knows and loves.”
Context of the Arrest
Sala’s arrest comes amid strained relations between Iran and Western nations. Last week, Iran summoned Swiss and Italian diplomats over the arrest of two Iranian nationals abroad, possibly adding a layer of complexity to Sala’s detention.

Advocacy for Press Freedom
Sala’s case has drawn attention to the risks faced by journalists operating in countries with restricted press freedoms. Her work, including interviews with diverse Iranian voices, highlights the crucial role of journalism in amplifying stories from underrepresented communities.
Next Steps
Italy continues to work with Iranian authorities to clarify Sala’s legal situation and push for her release. Meanwhile, calls for action from international journalism advocacy groups are intensifying.
