Indonesia’s new President Prabowo Subianto shared a video of his congratulatory phone call to President-elect Donald Trump, showing the two leaders exchanging praise and discussing potential future meetings. Prabowo, a former special forces commander, referred to his US military training and expressed admiration for Trump’s achievements. In the nearly three-minute conversation posted on Prabowo’s social media, he emphasized his eagerness to congratulate Trump in person, stating he would fly to meet him “anytime.”
During the call, Trump complimented Prabowo on his English, to which the Indonesian leader replied, “All my training is American, sir,” highlighting his time training with US military forces in the 1980s.
Prabowo, currently in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to meet President Joe Biden to commemorate the 75th anniversary of US-Indonesian relations and discuss areas for further cooperation. However, no confirmation has been made on whether he will also meet with Trump during his visit.
This cordial exchange reflects the broader trend of world leaders extending warm congratulations to Trump, as he begins shaping his administration’s foreign policy. Analysts continue to watch for which leaders might secure a prominent position in Trump’s early foreign engagement efforts.
