Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party, has found herself under scrutiny after Elon Musk fact-checked her claims that Reform UK faked its membership numbers. The dispute, which has escalated into a public spat between Badenoch and Reform leader Nigel Farage, centers on allegations of “fakery” and inflated membership data.
The Controversy Explained
The conflict began when Mrs. Badenoch accused Mr. Farage and Reform UK of using a “fake ticker” to inflate their membership figures. In a series of tweets, she alleged that Reform’s tracker was “coded to tick up automatically” and criticized Farage for spreading “endless lies, smoke, and mirrors.”
In response, Mr. Farage demanded an apology and presented evidence that the membership data was accurate and updated in real time through a verified API. Farage stated, “When will you apologize to me and 146,077 other members of Reform UK?”
A community note—a fact-checking feature on Musk’s social platform X (formerly Twitter)—has since appeared under Badenoch’s tweets, labeling her claims as false. The note clarified:
“This claim is false. It’s not a ‘fake ticker’ – the website code clearly shows data being pulled via an API. Sky News has independently verified the source of the API data and confirmed that the membership number is accurate.”
Reform UK’s Evidence and Response
Reform UK shared its internal membership tracking system with The Telegraph, which reportedly showed strong evidence that the numbers are based on real-time data logged via a third-party service.
Farage, visibly angered by Badenoch’s accusations, hinted at legal action if she does not retract her statements. “I’m going to take some action in the next couple of days,” Farage said, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Musk’s Role in the Debate
Elon Musk, who recently met with Farage at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, has voiced his support for Reform UK’s rising membership. Earlier this week, Musk tweeted, “Change is coming,” in reference to Reform’s momentum.
Speculation is also mounting that Musk could contribute $100 million (£78 million) to support Reform UK, bolstering its campaign ahead of the next general election.
Farage praised Musk as a “hero” and credited him with helping the party appeal to younger voters. “The shades, the bomber jacket, the whole vibe. Elon makes us cool,” Farage remarked.

The Bigger Picture
The clash comes at a pivotal moment for UK politics, with Reform UK positioning itself as a significant challenger to traditional parties. Badenoch’s accusations and Musk’s intervention have added fuel to the fire, drawing widespread attention to Reform’s membership claims.
For now, Farage awaits a public apology from the Conservative leader, with the possibility of legal proceedings looming.
