Controlled Explosion Conducted at London Euston Station Following Suspicious Package Report

Police conducted a controlled explosion at Euston railway station in London on Saturday after a suspicious package prompted an evacuation and the establishment of safety cordons around the area.

Details of the Incident

The Metropolitan Police were alerted to a suspicious package at the busy central London station around midday. Passengers and staff were evacuated as a precaution while specialist officers assessed the situation.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the police said:

“Police cordons are in place as a precaution while officers investigate a suspect package.”

A controlled explosion was later carried out by the explosive ordnance disposal team, and the cordons were subsequently lifted. The police thanked the public for their patience during the disruption.

Context and Other Recent Incidents

This incident follows two other reports of suspicious packages over the past two days:

  • Gatwick Airport (Friday):
Part of the South Terminal was evacuated after a package raised suspicions. Specialist officers made the area safe, and two individuals detained during the investigation were released without charge. Flights experienced delays and cancellations, and passengers were advised to contact airlines for updates.
  • US Embassy in South London (Friday):
A suspicious package found outside the embassy prompted a controlled explosion by police. The Met later confirmed it was a hoax device.

Despite the proximity of these incidents, police have stated they are not treating them as linked at this time.

Impact on Travel

The evacuation caused delays and disruptions for passengers at Euston station, a major transport hub. Travelers are advised to check for updates before setting out, as normal operations have now resumed.

Safety Measures and Advice

Authorities have emphasized the importance of vigilance and swift action in such scenarios to ensure public safety. Anyone noticing unattended or suspicious items is urged to report them immediately to the police or station staff.
